Car trouble is always an inconvenience but, when you have vehicle problems in the winter, it can be dangerous because of the potential of being stranded in ice, snow, and low temperatures. While some mishaps are inevitable, you should be on the safe side and prepare your car now for the winter by following these tips.

Changing your oil and oil filter will keep every part of your engine moving as it should.

Check and charge your battery. Frigid temperatures can be hard on car batteries. Prepare now by checking to make sure your battery has a good charge, is in good working order and is intact.

Check your tires. When wintry precipitation hits, your ability to navigate potentially treacherous roads is only as good as your tires. Make sure they are in good shape. If you live in an area known for getting a lot of snow and ice, consider getting a set of snow tires or chains to combat hazardous road conditions.

Inspect your lights. When snow is falling, visibility is key—not just for you, but other drivers. Make sure that all your lights—headlights, brake lights, and taillights—are in good working order and clearly visible to other drivers.

Check air filters. Cars work harder during cold weather. Installing a fresh air filter will make it a little easier on your vehicle during the winter months. Remember to change your cabin air filter too, the air you breathe in the car will be cleaner. A fresh filter also will keep your heat working well.

Keep a stocked emergency kit at all times. Getting stranded in your vehicle during the winter could be deadly. Prepare by putting together an emergency kit that contains a blanket, a flashlight, batteries, non-perishable food, and water. You never know when you will need it!
