Most of us hop into our vehicles and hit the road without giving it much thought. Never does anyone expect to breakdown on the side of the road, but when it does happen, don’t be unprepared. Follow these simple tips to be ahead of the game and prepare yourself for the unexpected.
Safety
With any vehicle breakdown, the number one rule of thumb is safety. If you find that your vehicle has a mechanical breakdown, flat tire, or the like, always move to safety and out of the way of traffic as much as possible. It is also a good idea to always let someone know your whereabouts, so that if you do breakdown, emergency crews will be able to pinpoint your location better.
Prepare your vehicle
When you are out on the highway, you never know what type of vehicle problems you may encounter. Always be sure to keep a first aid kit in your vehicle, as well as a “care kit.” A care kit should include nonperishable snacks like protein bars, bottles of water, a battery charger, an emergency contact card, extra prescription medications (if you take any), and important documents (insurance, registration, additional contacts). A small battery-operated radio may also come in handy, and some models are available with a cell phone outlet for charging. Remember to pack a flashlight with extra batteries.
Watch the weather
It is a good idea to keep a check on the weather, even when storms are not imminent. Although knowledge of a severe storm striking is important, pay attention to temperatures too. During summer months, a person can dehydrate rather quickly, which is why keeping some bottled water in your trunk is not a bad idea. Also, keep a blanket of sorts in your vehicle during cooler temperatures. If you ever breakdown during the winter during freezing temperatures, a blanket can help keep you warm until help arrives.
Keep an eye on your gas gauge
Don’t let your gas tank get too low. Ideally, you should never travel with your gas tank low or close to “E.” If you break down but your car can run idle, you may need to turn on the air conditioner or heat to stay comfortable.
Get a cell phone
This day and age, cell phones are about a dime a dozen. Even if you live on a fixed income, there are services available to fit any budget. There is almost no reason not to have a cell phone in case of emergencies, even if you have a prepaid plan that is specifically for those purposes only. Consider getting a cell phone that fits your budget, just in case you find yourself stranded on the side of the road.
